Today is the day that Google globally launches its +1 button on Google Search, a feature that allows users to click ‘+1’ in order to recommend an advert or site.
How does it work?
It’s all about word of mouth marketing…but on Google search. The logic being that when making decisions, people often turn to those they trust for recommendations. With the +1 button, people can recommend your site’s content or ads to their friends and contacts right when it’s most useful – on Google search.
Let’s say you own a hotel in Madrid. Your good friend Brian had a lovely stay at your hotel last summer. When Brian starts researching accommodations for his next trip to Spain, he searches on Google.com while signed into his Google account, and sees your ad (One that needs improvement by the way!).
He clicks the +1 button on the ad to recommend it to his contacts. When Brian’s friend Ann then plans her trip to Spain, she signs in to her Google account, searches, and also sees your ad – plus the personalised annotation that Brian +1’d it. Knowing that Brian recommends your hotel helps Ann decide where to stay during her travels.
Now, your fans can recommend your business for all their friends and contacts to see. By helping searchers see more personal, relevant ads, Google believe that you will see more qualified traffic. The +1 button will automatically be added to your ads over the next few weeks for searches on Google Search worldwide.
It’s much the same concept as ‘liking’ things on Facebook, and other social media sites, that your contacts then effectively see as recommendations. As depicted by the screenshot below from my very own Facebook feed.

Only time will tell if this new feature will be as successful on Google Search as it is with social media platforms such as Facebook but either way, it’s good to see new ideas and fresh thinking from the folk at Google.
