Sky news have reported in the last few hours of a site using paid search on Google to effectively trick people into believing they need to pay for a free security check when visiting the US- visit the link here.

The article reports that the site is ‘on the brink of being banned’ by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and questions have been raised in the article about its conformity with advertising standard guidelines and what the ASA might do but there is no mention of Google’s position as a facilitator for the scam. Of course Google cannot be held responsible for the actions of these scammers but shouldn’t it pull the plug on all AdWords advertising associated with this domain as a matter of corporate social responsibility?!

I’m sure the Google PR machine could gain greatly by doing the right thing here and looking after the best interests of its users. The question is- will it? Watch this space…
