Display bug in Google sitelinks?

At the moment, I'm seeing some strange quirks in Google's sitelinks display, most noticeably, odd replacement of English characters with (at a guess) Japanese characters, e.g. with the following for a site with sections for UK regions:

Character set problems in Google sitelinks

I'm not sure of what type of programming bug could result in this happening, but I wonder if this tells us anything about Google's processes?

Does anyone know what the characters above actually represent? The best I can do is searches like this

Added: Actually, this is stranger than I thought. Check out these search results:

Anyone with knowledge of Japanese or similar know if there's any relationship between the "Han" character and the letter "L"? Struggling to figure this out!

pseudo bullets

Looks like it might be something to do with preceeding characters - pseudo bullets like "•Home"

Good call on the bullets

Does look like certain characters used as bullet points (+the next letter) are confusing Google somewhat!

Interesting - we're also watching site links ...

a lot of stuff going on with site-links - also in Germany and Austria.

We even dedicated our Today SEO Q&A video post to the site link changes in Sept 2009.

Cheers,Christoph
