Link exchanges, also known as reciprocal linking, is a common practice in building links, especially with new websites. Obtaining links is beneficial in that they help your website to be indexed by search engines and the more high quality links pointing to the website, the higher your website will rank in search engine results. Receptional's ethical link building strategy will help you get the right links, whilst avoiding upsetting search engines and users in the process. Link exchanges can take the form of banner exchanges and mentions in blogs/news articles, but the majority is the simple adding each others site to a links page. This is rarely the most beneficial way of making use of a link exchange.

Search engines use links to help understand what your site is about. By exchanging links with a site of a similar nature, you will be helping search engines to understand the content of your own site. However, if you exchange links with sites of quite dissimilar content, you risk confusing search engines on what your site is about and thereby upsetting the prominence of your website. Developing a good, ethical link building strategy is a very important step in promoting your website to the top of major search engine results and to make your website visible to more potential clients.
It is important when you're exchanging links that your partner gives you a clean link, preferably with some good anchor text. If they're redirecting your link, or have added a nofollow tag on it or to their robots.txt file, then it is of no benefit to your link building campaign.
Whilst you may find link exchanges the easiest method of link building, the downside of having too many reciprocal links is that it becomes an unnatural way of link building and a metric that doesn't impresssearch engines. We recommend that you use a variety of link building methods as part of your campaign to make sure that you do not receive penalties but climb higher up the search engine results. Receptionals offer a wide variety of link building methods to help you with this.
Link exchanges aren't the only method of link building. We can help you with a number of other ethical link building methods to improve the prominence of your website on the search engine results pages, including one way link building, directory submissions and press releases.
