Facebook to Stream Live Football for First Time

Facebook is set to stream its first live football match with the opening match of this year’s FA Cup.

The preliminary round match between Ascot United and Wembley FC will be streamed live on Facebook on Friday 19th August at 19:45 local time.

FA Cup sponsors Budweiser anticipates the match attracting a global audience despite both clubs being minnows and not even household names in England.

The live stream will only be available to Facebook users aged 18 and above.

Budweiser is able to stream preliminary rounds of the FA Cup due to the competition not having any broadcasting rights holders at this early stage.  ITV and ESPN hold the rights to screen matches from the first round proper.

Last month, the German DFL-Supercup was streamed live with English commentary on YouTube in 175 countries including the United Kingdom.

And previously, in July all 24 matches from the South American Copa America were streamed live on YouTube in 50 countries.  However, this did not include the United Kingdom due to ESPN owning the rights.

This Facebook first FA Cup match between Ascot United and Wembley FC can be streamed at Budweiser’s Facebook Page: www.facebook.com/BudweiserUK
