Yahoo launches social network site

Yahoo has launched a social networking website that will allow mobile subscribers to share pictures and videos with their friends.

The Mixd website will also let users send text messages to large groups of people at once, reports Information Week.

Scott Gatz, director of Yahoo's Advanced Products told the publication: "It [Mixd] is really an experiment. We're putting it out to consumers to see how they use the product."

The service aims to make it easy for groups of people with similar interests to arrange social activities and meetings.

Users will also be able to load pictures and videos from their mobile phones onto a website to share with others.

Mixd is being initially targeted at university students in campuses across America.

Earlier this month, Yahoo announced it is to work in conjunction with Vodafone to launch a mobile advertising scheme in Britain.

The search engine will display adverts on a number of Vodafone products, while customers who agree to view them may get discounts on services.
