Firms advised to become sociable in marketing campaigns
Despite the popularity of social media websites such as Digg and Netscape in driving online traffic and sales, marketers could do more to make these portals work for them, it has been claimed.

Neil Patel, writing on Search Engine Land, suggests that advertisers should ensure the title of the content they submit to websites like Digg is loaded with keywords.

He claimed that by getting such key terms into anchor text companies can increase their search engine rankings.

Mr Patel added that as many social media website users "don't like reading a lot of content", companies should ensure that their articles are "easy to read, short and to the point".

By making sure introductory paragraphs are attractive to users, advertisers are reported to be more likely to generate links.

He also recommended that companies set up a comments option on their website and create an RSS feed to help increase content and to drive traffic.

Yesterday, a study by Fox Interactive Media indicated that carrying out a marketing campaign through social websites such as MySpace and YouTube can provide "momentum" in terms of generating online income.
