Online advertising drives digital publishing revenue
Internet publishers witnessed a leap in revenue over the course of 2006, new figures reveal.

According to research by the UK Association of Online Publishers (AOP), turnover for digital operations rose to £575 million last year, an increase from the £344 million recorded in 2005.

Chairman of the AOP Simon Waldman said: "This is a remarkable set of figures. 2006 was a year of spectacular digital growth, innovation and investment by the UK's media industry - and our forecasts show there is no sign of this letting up."

The study revealed that online advertising is the largest source of revenue, accounting for 75 per cent of publishers' income.

Meanwhile, display advertising (incorporating sponsorship) and paid-for content were reported to contribute towards 16 and 12 per cent of revenue respectively.

Overall, digital content was reported to account for an average of 12 per cent of AOP members' revenue.

Meanwhile, a study by the Internet Advertising Bureau revealed that during 2006, internet advertising spend overtook the print industry for the first time.

The research indicated £2.01 billion was spent on online marketing, a rise of 41.2 per cent from 2005.
