Google usurps Yahoo! as Friendster ad platform choice
Google has replaced Yahoo! as the ad platform for one of the original social network sites.

Friendster, which was launched in 2002, has more than 40 million users worldwide. Both search and keyword-targeted advertising are included in the exclusive agreement with Google, which will last until 2009.

"As a top 25 global web brand with 19 million monthly unique visitors and six billion page views per month, this agreement with Google allows Friendster to leverage the best industry platform to monetise our high-growth global business," said Aaron Barnes, vice president of sales and business development at Friendster.

Friendster has already set the wheels in motion following the deal, with the text and display advertising aspects of the Google deal already incorporated. The search facet is expected to be introduced by June.

The Google deal sees previous advertising platform Yahoo! usurped, something that may temper the positive feeling surrounding Yahoo! following news that its Panama advertising network was producing strong results. Many onlookers have seen the Friendster development as a notable loss for the firm.

Friendster will be hoping that the choice of search engine powerhouse Google will continue to make 2007 a positive year, after the social network was recognised in January as one of the top 100 companies by AlwaysOnMedia.
