Facebook Paid PR Firm for Anti-Google Campaign

Facebook has been caught paying a top public relations firm, Burson-Marsteller to plan negative stories about Google in the mid over in the USA.

Burson-Marsteller are one of the world’s largest PR firms, tried getting into the USA Today and the Washington Post amongst other high-profile USA news outlets.  Their intention was to write scaremongering stories about Google’s privacy policies.

Facebook and Google are already bitter rivals and this will only damage their relations more so.  This story came into light in leaked emails on Wednesday.

The most popular social network confirmed to the Daily Beast that it had hired Burson-Marsteller.

The “assignment” with Burson-Marsteller has since been terminated and they are no longer working with the social network.

Facebook’s cover was blown when Burson-Marsteller offered to help a prominent internet security blogger, Chris Soghoian, write an op-ed.  Soghoian’s response was to challenge the company’s assertion that Google’s Social Circle feature was a privacy threat.
