Getting more from AI: The CRAFT approach we use every day

At Receptional, we’ve seen firsthand how transformative AI tools can be. The results are often impressive, but I’ve noticed something interesting…

Many of us aren’t using these powerful tools as much as we could.

The barrier isn’t disappointing outcomes but rather uncertainty about how to communicate effectively with AI to get consistently strong results. That’s why we’ve developed a simple framework that helps everyone on our team get more from AI systems. We call it CRAFT.

What is CRAFT?

CRAFT is a prompt engineering framework that helps structure your instructions to AI systems. Each letter represents an essential component of an effective prompt:

  • Character: Establishing the AI’s role
  • Realm: Defining its expertise
  • Audience: Clarifying who will consume the content
  • Focus: Setting a clear aim
  • Template: Requesting a specific format

This straightforward approach helps bridge the gap between AI’s capabilities and our daily work, making these tools more accessible and valuable.

Why prompting matters

Before diving into the framework, let’s understand why good prompts matter.

AI systems like ChatGPT or Claude are incredibly capable but need clear guidance. The quality of your results depends directly on how well you communicate your needs. Think of it as briefing a new team member – vague instructions lead to disappointing work.

The CRAFT Framework in detail

Let’s take a closer look at the CRAFT framework in operation.

Character: Establish the AI’s role

Start by telling the AI which professional role to adopt. This focuses its knowledge and shapes its approach.

  • Basic prompt: “Write a blog post about sports betting.”
  • CRAFT prompt: “You are a senior content strategist specialising in iGaming content…”

Realm: Define its expertise

Specify the knowledge domain, industry focus, geographical market, or time period to narrow the AI’s focus.

  • Basic prompt: “Write about marketing campaigns.”
  • CRAFT prompt: “…with expertise in UK regulatory compliance for sports betting operators…”

Audience: Who will consume the content?

Tell the AI who will read, view, or use the output, helping it calibrate tone, terminology, and detail level.

  • Basic prompt: “Create a report on our campaign performance.”
  • CRAFT prompt: “…writing for CMOs who need strategic insights rather than technical details…”

Focus: Set a clear aim

Specify precisely what you want to achieve and any particular aspects to emphasise or avoid.

  • Basic prompt: “Give me ideas for our marketing.”
  • CRAFT prompt: “…focusing on player acquisition strategies that balance acquisition costs with lifetime value…”

Template: Request a format

Indicate how you want the information structured to make it immediately useful.

  • Basic prompt: “Write about responsible gambling.”
  • CRAFT prompt: “…format your response as a 5-point action plan with clear implementation steps for each recommendation.”

CRAFT in practice

Here’s how a complete CRAFT prompt might look:

“You are a senior content strategist specialising in iGaming content with expertise in UK regulatory compliance for sports betting operators. Write for CMOs who need strategic insights rather than technical details, focusing on player acquisition strategies that balance acquisition costs with lifetime value. Format your response as a 5-point action plan with clear implementation steps for each recommendation.”

The art of follow-up

Sometimes, even a well-crafted initial prompt needs refinement. Three effective follow-up tactics include:

  1. Refine: “That’s a good start. Could you make it more specific to casino players rather than sports bettors?”
  2. Add detail: “Now add some concrete examples from successful campaigns.”
  3. Polish: “Rewrite this in our bold but responsible brand voice.”

Get CRAFT-y

The CRAFT framework transforms your interaction with AI from frustrating to fruitful. By providing clear structure and direction, you’ll get consistently better results while saving time on revisions.

At Receptional, we’re seeing impressive gains in productivity as team members adopt this approach. The framework ensures that AI becomes a genuine force multiplier rather than just another technology that promises more than it delivers.
