DraftKIngs, one of the biggest names in sports betting, is reportedly entering the growing prediction market. With a pending application and the recent registration of “DraftKings Predict,” the industry big-hitter is signaling its intent to extend beyond the traditional sportsbook offerings.
This development comes as Kalshi—the first regulated trading platform—continues to disrupt the evolving iGaming industry in the United States, raising questions about the future of the sports betting landscape in America.
The allure of prediction markets
Prediction markets allow users to wager on future events, from political elections to economic indicators. This arena has been gaining traction, with companies like Kalshi disrupting the iGaming scene. Last month’s Super Bowl saw over $2.5 million traded on Kalshi, and the opening weekend of March Madness generated almost $210 million.
What’s particularly groundbreaking about these prediction platforms is their nationwide availability. Unlike traditional sports betting, which is only legal in 33 states, prediction markets like Kalshi operate in all 50 states. This unprecedented reach is due to their classification as financial contracts regulated by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) rather than as gambling.
This legal distinction has opened up a massive market opportunity. Even in states like Texas, where sports gambling remains illegal, residents can now participate in what effectively amounts to sports betting through these prediction markets. Robinhood, the popular trading app, has also entered this space, offering sports prediction markets to its users across the country.
Regulatory challenges and industry resistance
This new frontier isn’t without its challenges. Las Vegas recently issued a cease-and-desist demand to Kalshi, highlighting the regulatory hurdles these evolving platforms are starting to face from the more traditional operators.
Despite these challenges, prediction markets remain attractive. Their ability to operate across state lines presents a significant disruption to the traditional sports betting industry and could potentially reshape the entire landscape of online wagering in the United States.
Meanwhile, DraftKings itself is facing challenges on other fronts. In February, the company completed its $750 million acquisition of Jackpocket, a leading Lottery courier service. However, shortly after, Jackpocket was forced to suspend its operations in Texas due to a statewide ban on all Lottery couriers. This incident underscores the regulatory hurdles DraftKings must navigate as it seeks to diversify its offerings.
What it means for the industry
DraftKings’ entry into the prediction market could mark a significant shift in the iGaming industry. If successful, it may legitimize and popularise prediction markets in the mainstream betting industry. However, the extent to which regulators will support or oppose these platforms remains a critical factor.
For operators and stakeholders in the iGaming space, this move presents both opportunities and challenges:

DraftKings’ move into prediction markets is bold, but its success will depend on regulatory approval, market adoption, and the company’s ability to overcome existing hurdles. As the iGaming industry continues to evolve, this development could shape the future of online wagering in unprecedented ways.
