Now in its 86th year, March Madness is a cornerstone of American sports. However, with more and more states opening their doors to legalize sports betting, it has become much greater than just an annual event on the calendar.
Nowadays, the annual NCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments—or ‘The Big Dance’—are one of the most lucrative events for sportsbooks. In fact, it’s a billion-dollar betting bonanza, with an eye-watering $15.5 billion wagered in 2023 as Americans took advantage of the expanding legal markets.
There was a stark decline in the figures 12 months ago when wagers dropped to $2.7 billion. However, the industry is expecting those numbers to jump up again this year in what could be a slam dunk for operators—as over $3.1 billion is tipped to be placed in legal bets across the men’s and women’s tournaments.
Once again, the tournament is set to offer critical insights into the evolving sports betting landscape in the United States. Let’s examine some of the key factors.
Why March Madness is a game-changer for sportsbooks
Unlike the Super Bowl, which generates a single-event betting frenzy across the states where sports betting is legalized, March Madness spans several weeks—keeping bettors engaged throughout the tournament.
Therefore, major operations in the U.S., like your DraftKings and FanDuels, are heavily reliant on March Madness punters, particularly casual bettors who may not regularly wager on sporting events for the rest of the year.
However, the ultimate goal for these traditional big hitters is to convert these once-a-year bettors into long-term customers, making the Big Dance a crucial player acquisition period.
Kalshi’s disruptive influence on the market
For the first time, alternative platforms are also entering the March Madness arena. As we have previously reported, Kalshi—a regulated event-trading platform in all 50 states across the U.S.—is gaining traction by offering prediction outcomes tied to the tournament.
Despite recent backlash from Nevada, with Las Vegas demanding they cease and desist, Kalshi users wagered almost $210 million worth of trades during the opening weekend of March Madness games, highlighting the growth of prediction platforms.
What’s at stake?
After a favorable Super Bowl LIX for operators, with the Philadelphia Eagles stunning the Kansas City Chiefs as underdogs at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans last month, sportsbooks will be hoping that the unpredictability of March Madness will once again play into their hands.
However, if the favorites advance deep into the latter rounds, it could lead to significant sportsbook losses. The balance between engagement and profitability is delicate, making March Madness one of the highest-stakes events in sports betting.
